About St. Mary of Victories

Historic Saint Mary of Victories Catholic Church, just south of the Gateway Arch, is a splendid and unique part of the heritage of old Saint Louis.

Founded in 1843 for German immigrants, it became the city's Hungarian Catholic Church and cultural center in 1956. Its acclaimed architecture, beautiful old paintings, ornate statuary and noted historical personalities have earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the few consecrated churches in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and has a magnificent high altar with hundreds of sacred relics.

Saint Mary’s accordingly offers a classically reverent style of worship in proclaiming the joy of Christ's Gospel to locals and tourists alike. The 11 a.m. Sunday Mass is mainly in English, with a touch of Hungarian in Scripture and song.

Saint Mary of Victories Catholic Church
, just south of the Gateway Arch, is a splendid and unique part of the heritage of old Saint Louis. Founded in 1843 for German immigrants, it is the second oldest church in the City of St. Louis.  It became the city's Hungarian Catholic Church and Cultural Center in 1957. Its acclaimed pre-Civil War architecture, beautiful old paintings, ornate statuary and noted historical personalities have earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the few consecrated churches in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and has a magnificent high altar and ornate side altars with hundreds of sacred relics.  We have a rich history that is inextricably linked with the early history of St. Louis, including being where the Sisters of St. Mary (SSM Health System) got their start and their name, and where Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R. preached a parish mission 151 years ago.

Our liturgies are reverent, faithful and welcoming.  We accordingly feature many traditional options in our sacred liturgies, including a unique Latin Ordinary Form Mass offered Ad Orientem (facing the high altar), with Gregorian Chant.  We also continue to have an English Mass with many special Hungarian touches. We periodically have Missa Cantata Extraordinary Form (Traditional Latin) Masses featuring our excellent Gregorian Chant Schola.

We need your help!

Over the years, as the neighborhood has changed, fewer and fewer of our original German and Hungarian parishioners regularly attend Mass.  Only 60 people regularly attend our church now.  This is partly because we are nearly completely hidden in our location south of the Poplar Street Bridge.  In any case, our finances each month continue to fall short, sometimes by as much as $3,000.  Our savings are limited and will not last forever, should the situation remain unchanged!

So please we ask you to be generous with your treasure, your time and your talent to keep old St. Mary of Victories around for another generation of Catholics in St. Louis.  Be a part of saving this historic and religious treasure.  The donate button below gives several options for helping us.  All donations are 501 c(3) tax deductable.

Safe Environment Program (Protecting God's Children)

"Certainly children are a gift from the LORD..."
--Psalm 127:3

St. Mary of Victories Catholic Church follows the requirements of the Archdiocese of St. Louis Safe Environment Program (Protecting God's Children). The program is designed to help protect the youth, elderly, and vulnerable adults of our parish as they participate in activities within our community. All volunteers and employees who work with children at St. Mary of Victories Chapel must be in full compliance with the program.

These requirements are mandated by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops and are followed by every diocese in the country.  The policies are the Church’s attempt to ensure the suitability of all adults who work or volunteer around your children.

If you have any questions, or have taken these steps at another Parish in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, please contact Mary Brende (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) at the Parish Office.  Phone Number 314-231-8101.

For more details, including a program schedule of workshops, please connect to the Safe Environment Program website at

Listen to Today's Homily from Fr. Brian W. Harrison, O.S.  Click Here.Fr. Brian Harrison delivers the homily at Mass.

The Book of Wisdom (1st reading) speaks to us of the inestimable value of prudence --
a treasure far more precious than riches, power or fame.  Prudence -- the 'queen' of the four great cardinal (natural) virtues -- corresponds very closely to the biblical concept of wisdom:  it is that practical good sense that enables us to set our priorities right, act with foresight, and order our lives, time and resources rightly according to God's will.  The lectionary links this reading to today's Gospel (Mark, ch. 10), in which our Lord builds on the Old Testament's warnings against making worldly wealth and power our supreme goal:  he goes beyond that, holding out as a supremely wise decision -- for those who can accept this challenge -- the sacrifice of all personal possessions and family life in order to follow Christ with an undivided heart.  This is the call to what we now know as the religious (consecrated) life -- a perennially necessary spiritual powerhouse at the living heart of the Church.  This is authentic human wisdom; but today's second reading (Hebrews) reminds of the supreme wisdom that is God's alone: His Word (Logos) is Wisdom itself -- a "two edged sword" that penetrates to every secret of our hearts.  It sees, knows and judges all.
