Introduction to the Church

An Enchanting Gem of Old Saint Louis

Welcome to Saint Mary of Victories

Saint Mary of Victories Catholic Church stands as one of the most remarkable houses of worship in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis — a living testament to the faith, resilience, and artistry of generations of immigrant Catholics who called this city home.

Nestled just south of the Gateway Arch in the historic heart of old Saint Louis, this majestic church was founded in 1843 to serve the growing German Catholic community. Over the decades it evolved into the beloved Hungarian Catholic Church of Saint Louis, welcoming another wave of devoted faithful while preserving its sacred traditions.

National Register of Historic Places — Saint Mary of Victories has earned a coveted place on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its architectural beauty and enduring cultural significance.

A Consecrated Church

As one of the very few consecrated churches in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Saint Mary of Victories holds a special canonical status. The magnificent high altar is adorned with hundreds of sacred relics — a remarkable collection that reflects the Church’s deep commitment to preserving the traditions of the Catholic faith.

Administered by Volunteer Laity

Saint Mary of Victories is lovingly administered by volunteer lay faithful — men and women who give their time, talent, and treasure to preserve this sacred space and ensure its doors remain open for worship, prayer, and pilgrimage. The church depends on the generosity and dedication of its lay volunteers working in cooperation with the Archdiocese of Saint Louis.

This model of lay stewardship reflects a beautiful dimension of the Church’s life — the active participation of the baptized faithful in the care and mission of a historic parish.
